Even at the shore it was hot this week, but getting up early to take some photos takes the edge off. First a walk to the bay, some early fisherfolk had beat me to it, but it was pleasant anyway. Not to be deterred, I headed for the beach and found a few things to snap.

Longwood in early spring. A willow just coming into leaf down near the Italian Water Garden. Sunday April 10 was a bit cool and overcast, not much was in bloom yet but the promise is everywhere. Give it a few more weeks and this place will be popping. I went to hear a lecture on "Beyond Beauty" which was given by the head of the horticultural staff and was aimed towards explaining where and how Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-68120318123549753.post-84680916080828648982011-04-01T09:43:00.001-04:002011-04-01T17:00:31.253-04:00Very Funny, Mother Nature

Last night's lunar eclipse coincided with the winter solstice and the longest day of the year to create such an incredible din in my head that I had no choice but to stay up and see it for myself. After all, as everyone on every news show that talked about it reminded me, this is my last chance since another such event will not occur until 2090 and I, if not all of us, will be long gone by then.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-68120318123549753.post-71960389740265978702010-11-24T14:06:00.002-05:002010-11-24T16:47:12.843-05:00Happy ThanksgivingUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-68120318123549753.post-60690584723930856772010-11-15T16:59:00.003-05:002010-11-15T17:15:23.817-05:00The Shore in the FallI love the Shore anytime, any season, but it's especially nice in the late Fall. The header picture was taken at the end of Madeline's street looking out to the bay. I think the golden color the marsh grass turns in the Fall is striking. The last photo was the Saturday-night sunset taken from her deck. If I'd known it was going to be so spectacular, I'd have headed down to the bay again, but it Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0Sea Isle City, NJ, USA39.14736896349185 -74.70359802246093839.139048463491847 -74.718189022460933 39.155689463491854 -74.689007022460942tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-68120318123549753.post-77159325357959111122010-11-10T15:55:00.002-05:002010-11-15T17:45:55.922-05:00Siena
Siena streets exhibit the flags of the contrada or wards, the divisions of the city still in effect from medieval times. Each contrada has its own flag, mascot, animal and these districts are fiercely competitive especially during Palio (horserace) times. Henry James was 26 when he crossed the border from Switzerland and made his way, on foot, down into Italy — “warm & living & palpable,” as he wrote ecstatically to his sister on Aug. 31, 1869. The romance kindled that day lasted nearly 40 years, and played a significant part in his career; he set some of his greatest works in Italy, including “Daisy Miller,” “Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-68120318123549753.post-48754115150418345242010-06-17T15:50:00.008-04:002010-06-17T16:21:43.959-04:00A Terrible Beauty Was BornPhoto from the Guardian.uk.coWave rolling up on the shores of the GulfYou could hardly believe it; it was truly cringe-worthy. Never in my life do I remember this much snow practically all at once. First we had a huge snowfall over the weekend. I measured 19 inches on the table on my deck.
